Emeryville-based Clif Bar & Company, which sells energy bars and other snacks, has been acquired by Mondelēz International, Inc. for $ 2.9 billion, company officials announced on Monday.

Executives with both companies celebrated the agreement in a joint news release earlier this week, with Clif Bar chief executive officer Sally Grimes saying that Mondelēz International is “the right partner at the right time to support Clif in our next chapter of growth,” adding that both companies’ “purposes and cultures are aligned.”

The acquisition includes brands CLIF, LUNA and CLIF Kid, company officials said.

Grimes said joining Mondelēz International will “accelerate our growth while staying true to our deeply ingrained Five Aspirations – sustaining our people, planet, community, business, and brands – five bottom lines that have grounded our company since its founding and will remain our North Star going forward. ”

Dirk Van de Put, the chief executive officer of Mondelēz International, said in a statement that Clif Bar “embodies our purpose to‘ empower people to snack right ’and we look forward to advancing this important work with Clif’s committed colleagues in the years ahead. ”

Mondelēz International will continue Clif Bar’s business operations out of its Emeryville headquarters in Alameda County, with manufacturing continuing out of facilities in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Indianapolis, company officials said.
